Trajan's Column was commissioned by the Roman Senate to commemorate Emperor Trajan's victory in the Dacian Wars. The marble frieze wrapping around the column follows the narrative of Emperor Trajan's victories over the barbarians who are identifiable by their style of dress (pants, hats) and facial hair. Situated in Trajan's forum, the monument includes a spiraling staircase on the inside, and eventually became the resting place of the emperor.
Commissioned by the Senate; most likely supervised under Apollodorus
